Online Libraries

Never underestimate the usefulness of a public library!

They let you read books, watch movies, and listen to music, all for free. All you need is a valid library card. Today, you don't even need to physically travel to the library to get htese great benefits - you can do everything online, right from your phone or tablet.

Here are four online libraries for you to enjoy; two are apps that work with local libraries, while the other two are more exotic and have a much larger selection.

Libby
While I haven't personally used Libby, I know people who do, and they love it.

Hoopla
Hoopla is my go-to app for books from the local library. The user interface is very easy to use, as you can search by author, genre, series, and more. If a title you're interested in is also part of a larger series, you can view the entire series by tapping a link on its about page. Very useful!

This app also provides recommendations based on what you've been reading or viewing lately, so you won't have any trouble finding something to read.

Open Library
The Open Library is the internet's largest free library. You don't need a library card here; just a free account. Once everything is set up, get the app from your device's app store - the version for iPhones can be found here.

Unlike Hoopla and Libby, which offer digitized ebooks, the Open Library offers scanned copies of books. This does limit how they can be displayed, but personally, I think it's nicer. You also get to see any old notes or insets that people made on the copy of the book you're reading, which is pretty neat.

Importantly, the Open Library has a TON of books from days gone by, so if you ever want to read something from the 1800s, this is the place to start looking!

Wikisource
Wikisource sounds like the name of an academic tool, but it's actually a massive online library of public domain works. Unlike the others, there isn't an app (that I know of) but you don't need an account or library card to read any of the books here.

Just click the link above and start browsing.
